2009-10-06 - Own-designed motor platform extends ABB’s reach to new customers and markets
Västerås, Sweden, October 5th, 2009 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won two orders to deliver medium-power traction motors at a combined worth of M€ 15. The first and largest order is to supply motors to Trainelec S.L. for subway trains. ABB will deliver motors continuously over several years, starting in fall 2009.
The Trainelec S.L. order was ABB’s first to deliver its new own-designed motor concept. The order was soon followed by a second order to a train project in China.
The new motor concept is module-based and can therefore quickly and easily be adapted to different customer requirements regarding e.g. cooling arrangements and bogie attachments. A new and flexible production process further reduces delivery times.
With its new motor concept, ABB strengthens its position as an independent component provider to the rapidly growing traction market. Besides the two new contracts, ABB has received a large number of requests for quotation from train manufacturers and OEMs in Europe, the U.S., South America and Asia.
”The orders show that our module-based motor concept helps us reach new customers and markets,” said Hans Samuelsson, globally responsible for traction motors at ABB Machines in Västerås, Sweden.
ABB Machines first introduced its new motor platform at the Innotrans trade show in Berlin, the largest traction trade show in the world, in fall 2008.
