ABB supplies switchgear of world’s largest capacity and fastest breaking speed in China

Meet the need of domestic power industry customers for high-reliable products

Beijing, China, July 16, 2008, — ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it will supply Shanghai Baosteel with a 12kV Is-Limiter for protection from generator loop for Baosteel No.1 Blast Furnace TRT Project. Being the switchgear with largest capacity and fastest breaking speed in the world, ABB’s Is-Limiter will be supplied by ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd and its delivery will be completed by the end of October. This is the first application of ABB’s Is-Limiter in the China market ever.

Along with the growing industrial and residential power consumption, power plants and large-sized industrial enterprises usually need to install larger power supply or additional generators for plant use, which may cause short-circuit current exceeds allowable value of original equipment bringing threats to the security of power system. The increasing demand for increasing power quality and the reliability of power system by domestic customers has made the domestic market for Is-Limiter gradually grows mature.

As the ideal switching device to solve the short-circuit problems, ABB’s Is-limiter can guarantee a total operate time within 1ms, and its virtual value of rated short circuit breaking current can be up to 210kA. This product can break the short-circuit current shortly after it happens and therefore solve the breaking problem of high short-circuit current successfully. When compared with complicated normal solutions, the equipment is both technologically reliable and economical when applied in transformer, machine wire feed, female connector of switch apparatus, or connecting wire connected in parallel with reactor. ABB’s Is-limiter can also effectively solve the short-circuit breaking problem caused by the new establishment and expansion of substations and lower total investment cost for customers.

In January 2008, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. started batch supply of Is-Limiter in China. Besides serving Chinese customers, Switchgears made by the company are also exported to countries such as Vietnam and Pakistan through system integrators to serve oversea power construction projects. So far, ABB Group has produced thousands of units of Is-Limiter which maintain safe and reliable operation in both AC and DC systems, especially in three-phase AC system all around the world.

Established in 1992, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd is the first joint venture company of ABB in China, and has currently become the world’s largest production and research base for medium voltage switchgear and vacuum circuit breakers. The year of 2007 is the eighth successive year when the company is ranked among Top 100 Electric Enterprises in China.
